I take your privacy seriously and I communicate iwth client only through secure means. My phone and fax are HIPAA compliant and I use email only for scheduling purposes, as long as my clients agree to this.
Exceptions to confidentiality in the therapeutic relationship include:
- I am a mandated reporter for abuse of children, the elderly, or other vulnerable populations. I am required by law to report any suspected abuse to the appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I have a duty to protect the other person and I may need to break confidentiality to do this.
- If a client intends to harm themself, I will do my best to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If a client does not cooperate, I may need to violate confidentiality to ensure their safety.
- If records are court ordered, I will discuss this with my client. I will supply only what is required and necessary to comply with the law, unless my client consents to the release of additional information.
